What's a good digital camera for a teenager?

Question by Kate: What's a good digital camera for a teenager?
I want to buy a digital camera for my birthday, but I have no idea what type of camera to get. My budget is up to $ 200, but I would prefer to have it be around $ 150. I don't know anything about the best brands, the number of pixels it should have, etc. Any recommendations would be much appreciated!
I think I want a camera with a rechargeable battery made specifically for the camera, it sounds like the best option.
I want a digital camera that can take good-quality video with sound, and a big screen. Does Nikon make those kinds of cameras?

First, don't worry about how many megapixels it has. That stat is over rated. You will most likely be viewing it on a computer screen. I have a 10 year old camera that is 3.34 megapixels, and I have yet to see any real difference in quality against a 10-12 megapixel one. Any camera you buy now will have more than enough so don't concern yourself there.

It really comes down to price and overall ease of use. While there are many good brands out there, I personally like Nikon. Long established with high quality, easy to use and good prices.

Consider whether you want to have to recharge a battery pack (which is cheaper in the long run) or buy AA batteries (which is more convienent especially if the battery pack is drained).

Some cameras will have more features than others, ask yourself if you really need or would use those features.

Nikon is my advice, but there are many other good choices.

  1. Resolution:

The number of mega-pixels you'll want in a camera will depend on what size you will want your pictures to come out. If you're going to be mainly uploading pictures to file sharing sites and printing out 5x7s (making broad assumption because you're younger) you won't want or need more than 4 mp. If you are interested in bigger print sizes, 8x10s and larger, you'll want at least 5 mp. If the mp count is too high though, the photo can suffer from image flaws

ISO: ISO is the sensitivity of the image sensor. The higher this number, the most sensitive the camera is to light, and the faster the film speed. You may want to consider the range of ISO settings, as 100 is standard, however more and more digital cameras are sold with unnecessarily high ISO features. If you set the ISO too high, your image will show a lot of "noise" from light.

    Features:

Image stabilizer is now a common feature which protects your pictures from blurring from an unsteady hand.

Autofocus is a good feature to have as well, as manually adjusting the camera will get old.

Color filters on the camera are fun to play with, and also handy to have when you just want to tint the world green.

Also, you'll want to have optical zoom, as it won't distort your picture quality the way digital zoom does.

My advice is to go to best buy or another electronics store and play around with the cameras, and see which ones you like as far as feature modes and size. The actual convenience of the camera is just as important as the investment in resolution and ISO.
