What is the best kind of inexpensive digital camera?

Question by amanda w: What is the best kind of inexpensive digital camera?
I am considering buying a digital camera before a trip to Europe. I want a nice one, but not too expensive. I am looking for something between 60-150 dollars. I am not into photography or anything supremely artistic. I just want my pictures to turn out nicely.

There are a few with new anti-shake unfortunately I haven't tried them out personally.

I do know a feature that you might want to consider

some cameras have eliminated the view finder for a screen only
(the screen only can be an issue in bright sun - you may not be able to see the screen well or when your battery starts to run low - screens use more battery power)

If you have a digital card bring it with you to a camera store or any store that has cameras on display ... you can snap pics and then bring it home or print it to see which you prefer, if the store has 1 hr dev. then you see immed. what you've got, just don't forget your card. My dad did it all the time and I now do it when considering a camera as well.

  1. Something else to concider is the purchase of a media card for your camera. My wife and I spent 10 days in Hawaii and between the two of us, took over 1000 photos (she took more than I did). So also look into a 1GB memory card. With that out of the way...

You won't find a decent digital camera under $ 100. A $ 100 - $ 200 range would be a lot better. Also - when you are in this price range, you won't find any that are truly better than the other, it's going to be more personal opinion. Below are some great cameras that are within a price range along with a link to them.

  2. Digital Photography Review has a Buying Guide which lets you select tons of things that are important to you and then gives you recommendations for the best cameras which meet your needs. A big advantage to this approach is that you can change a parameter such as price range and see how that changes the recommendations.

Matching a camera to your specific needs and desires is much better than just having someone recommend models that they like.

  3. I'd go to www.cnet.com. They have ratings listed by price range for all kinds of electronics. I've used them for computers and printers

  4. What a great question. The thing about the smaller end point and shoot digitals is that the sensor is quite small and so is the lens. The best thing to look for in a smaller digital camera is the lens and functionality. Canon have a nice range of smaller and inexpensive digitals. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategoryid=113

I hope this helps. Canon have the best lenses, and your lens is what gives you picture clarity and depth.

    Have a wonderful time away!
