Some would argue that has not yet happened... but this is interesting reading:

  1. As long as you qualify the question with "35mm", I'd say Nikon's D1 was the first viable camera to do that.

By viable, I mean "approaching the useability of a film camera".

  2. The Canon 1Ds was one of the first. It is 11 MP. They had the D30 (3 MP), and D60 (6MP), before that, but they were not really what you could say the equal of 35mm film. I still use the 1Ds. It has been tested that most any digital SLR in the 10 MP range can equal 35mm film as far as resolution, but no digital has the dynamic range of negative film, in other words, digital cannot capture extremes of shadow and highlight detail as well as film.

Now when you talk medium format and large format film, digital still is not the equal of film, except for perhaps the $ 20,000 and up medium format digital backs.

  3. The first digital camera based upon the body of a 35mm camera was the Kodak DCS420 (based upon a Nikon body)

Really the first digital camera to match film just came out. It is the Hasselblad H3D. Although it is a larger format than a 35mm, it is the closest yet to matching the old 35mm Kodachrome 25 emulsion.in sharpness and virtually no visible gain when enlarged to 20x30 inch prints

  4. High quality color film in a 35mm film camera is expected to have 4000 pixels by 6000 at best with daylight scenes. This is 24 Megapixels. Night time scenes are expected to be half the pixel width and height or 2000 x 3000 = 6 Megapixels. These are the scan rates that are used to scan 35 MM movie film into computers for motion picture projection and effect compositing. So, the answer to your question is that there are no 24 MP cameras in the non-professional camera market. Plenty of camera salesmen will tell you that you can't tell the difference with a 12 MP camera, but technically you need 24 MP to match 35 MM film.

  5. Some hardcore film addicts say it has not be developed yet.

I have heard before though that a 6MP is equal to 35mm film.

I think it is all in ones personal opinion.
