What is the best compact digital camera for low light situations?

Question by flight777: What is the best compact digital camera for low light situations?
Looking for the best compact (non-SLR) digital camera for shooting in low light without a flash. Needs to have a street price of less than $ 500. I've seen the Lumix DMC-LX5 which has an f2.0 lens. Is there anything comparable to this or better on the market? Thanks.

  1. I would suggest the Canon S95. f/2 lens, pocketable, very good image quality, and it costs about $ 450-$ 470.

  2. The much anticipated Panasonic Lumix LX5 is expensive, but it is without a doubt one of the best compact cameras on the market, offering superb build quality, classic design and easy handling, with fast performance and outstanding photographic versatility. The longer zoom range is a welcome improvement, however in terms of image quality there's just no real advantage over the older LX3.

  3. The Nikon Coolpix S9100 is one of several pocketable digicams packing a long zoom in its small frame, the sort of zoom you used to see only on bulky dSLR-like superzooms. At 18x optical, it reaches to a barely handholdable 450mm from a pretty generous 25mm wide angle that can see more of the room than most digicams.
