I want a digital camera for Christmas, but one that takes high quality photos, since I want to be a photographer. Anywhere under 300 dollars would be nice.

just go to best buy or any electronic store and you will be overwhelmed with cameras that fit your specific needs

  2. If you want to be a photographer than you should get a cheap SLR camera (non-digital) and practice taking real photographs manually. Your typical digital camera, a computer does all the work for you. And a digital SLR camera costs alot more than $ 300.

  3. If you want to break into the amateur-pro level camera market, you will want an SLR. You can go with film or digital. 35mm SLRs are going to cost about half as much for the same quality as a digital SLR. If you are interested in digital, then look here:

    http://www.dpreview.com/

I did a search for 35mm slr camera and this came up in my search:

Just remember to go to a store and hold the cameras you consider in your hands if that is possible (not sure about 35mm availability). You don't have to buy them there, just try them out so you know which one feels good. Make sure that the camera you choose has the features you would want and not too many that you don't.

When you look for lenses, which you can review on dpreview as well, which ones you will want will depend on what you like to shoot.

    I hope this helps.

edit-I own a 35mm SLR and could shoot in total automatic mode if I wanted. So there is no validity in suggesting getting a 35mm just because you have to do more work. The camera will do all the work in automatic modes whether it is digital or 35mm. However, it does cost more to shoot film and make mistakes, so you should be more aware of what you are doing so you don't waste a lot of money having bad shots processed and printed. Wheras, in a digital, you can just delete the bad ones.
You should get a 35mm if you are interested in one. I happen to love my 35mm. But I am getting my first DSLR after the holidays.

  4. Amateur photography assumes the photographer wants or has complete control over the aperture (f/stop), shutter speed, ISO, white balance and choice of lenses. That means some kind of DSLR.

P&S cameras have none of these features and are basically auto-focus, auto-exposure and no control over the shutter speeds or apertures. The sensors on P&S cameras are over 15 times smaller.

    * the least expensive DSLR with lens at this time is $ 450.
    * there are a lot of P&S cameras under $ 300.

The only thing you can do is develop your compositional skills and learn to fill the image frame so you don't have to crop any of you image later using a photo program losing some of an already small file.

  5. I have the Cannon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph. It's a great little camera!! It is literally small enough to put in your pocket and has a lot of features you can use to practice photography. You can even attach it to a tripod which looks a little funny but when you need to for night shots or something it's great. I've used the macro feature on it quite a bit and got some great photos. It has two kinds of zoom both optical and digital. For printable photos refrain from using the digital zoom as the photos are of a poorer quality.

There are some features in this camera that I didn't know were there until I read an online review of the camera.

I would recommend getting extra batteries and extra memory cards. The memory cards it uses are SD which are very easy to find and on sale quite often. I believe the camera can take an 8G or maybe even larger as long as it's High Capacity.

With the camera set to take photos using the most amount of memory I can get I think 300 or was it 600 photos? Or maybe more than that on a 2G card. I used it a lot this summer. I've had for over a year and really like it a lot.

I bought some off brand batteries from a place on e-Bay for under $ 15 and they have worked just fine with my camera. They have been really worth the little bit I paid.

The batteries for this camera are rechargeable and the charger comes with the camera. I have yet to buy a car recharger for my camera but I have thought about it. However with the extra batteries it's not really necessary. A completely empty battery is completely charged up and ready to go in about 2 hours, maybe less time than that.

I have dropped my camera several times (not from real high up and hasn't landed extremely hard) and it still works just fine.

I'm not sure if the SD1000 is still available but Cannon has a lot of different models of the PowerShot and some are more loaded with features than others. So do an online search to see which one you might want.

I hope find one you want and have a lot of fun with it!!

  6. go to your local pawn shop and get an old film slr or rangefinder. Something that still works nicely should be only 50-100 dollars. I suggest the Canon ql17 giii from ebay if you like taking candid pictures of people on the street or live in an urban setting. Old Nikon film slrs are great, so are other brands like minolta and olympus. Call the pawn shop and ask what they have. Try to get one that you can find the manual for online. This will make learning how to use your camera easier. P.S. there is no such thing as college-worthy digital photos for 300 dollars. You could get a nice scanner and scan your prints for cheaper. Film scanners are also nice and cheap these days. And remember, a crappy film picture is better than a crappy digital picture.
