I am looking for a good digital camera that would be capable of taking magnified photos of insects and other arthropods. I would also like the camera to be useful for general purposes as well. Preferably moderately priced.

If your looking for a compact digital camera get either a fuji f20/f30/f31 or a panasonic tz3. Uhhh for like a dslr I'd say a fuji s6500 is really good or a cannon rebel xti. If you can get your hands on a s6500 though, get it, its amazing.
ReplyDeleteA lot of these insects might see you as a possible predator, so you will have to photograph them from a good distance in order to get a good shot. You will need a lot of patience, a camera with very high elliptical zoom and maybe even some camouflage in some cases.
ReplyDeleteThe type of camera in itself is not that import. The important thing is the lens on the camera. You need one with very high elliptical zoom (10X+). These are not the cameras you buy at walmart for $ 200 that come with a non-removable lens. Most of these are cameras where the lens is removable. They are sold individually or as bundles which may include the lens, memory cards, tripods, etc. You are looking at $ 600-$ 800 if you want to take really professional pictures.
A DSLR with a true Macro lens.
ReplyDeleteIMO zoom lenses marked "macro" are misleading - they should be marked "close-focusing." They seldom give you more than a 1:4 (1/4 life size) image.
A true macro lens will give you a 1:1 (life size) image of your subject. A macro lens is designed for close-focusing and has a flat field of focus.
A focal length of 100mm works well for insects and other small subjects.
Pentax, Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus all offer affordable DSLR's and macro lenses.
You might find the book "Adventures In Closeup Photography" by Lief Ericksenn & Els Sincebaugh of interest.
The best camera I have tried for insect photography and close-ups is the Konica-Minolta A2, especially with a conversion lens. You may find one, or a similar A1 or A200 on the bay...
